6 Thalassemia patients to be funded by Zakath Fund for bone-marrow transplant
Zakath Fund has awarded letters of notification to 6 Thalassemia patients who will be funded for bone-marrow transplant by the foundation. Previously 18 Thalassemia patients were funded by Zakath Foundation for bone-marrow transplant.

The patients were awarded with these letters by First Lady Madam Fathimath Ibrahim during a ceremony held at Islamic Center today.

Speaking on behalf of NSPA at the ceremony, Mohamed Ismailfulhu said that even though Thalassemia was discovered in Maldives a long time ago only a handful of patients have under gone state funded bone-marrow transplant.

He said that unlike other diseases, the patients have to be monitored very carefully even after they are done with the transplant. He said that since the transplant is done after weakening the immune system, the likelihood of getting other diseases is high after a transplant. He said that hence a lot of tests need to be done regularly and NSPA is ready to provide all the assistance they can to these patients.

So far 57 patients have undergone bone-marrow transplant in Maldives. Out of them 16 patients passed away while the procedure failed on 5 patients.
