MDP have said that not holding the local elections as stipulated by the constitution is a barrier to rule of law.
A statement by MDP noted that the President of PPM refused to delay the elections. In addition, MDP and AP also said that they do not wish to delay the elections.
MDP said that while all major parties in Maldives and Elections commission has refused to delay the elections, the court has ordered to delay the elections just by considering the interests of few people. They said that this violates the electoral rights of the Maldivian people.
Election Commission has appealed the case at High Court now saying that the Civil Court ruling would create a legal precedence that would allow courts to delay other elections.
