Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Maldives Major General Retired BRWMRAB Thoradheniya have said that soldiers with disabilities in Sri Lankan army are taking part in international competitions and giving a good name to Sri Lanka.
Speaking at a ceremony held at Artificial Beach today to mark the international day for people with disabilities, the commissioner said that there are 20000 soldiers in the army who became disabled during the civil war. He said that out of them 500 soldiers take part in international sports competitions.
High Commissioner said that these soldiers were not born with disabilities and they became disabled during the war. “the three swimmers who came to Maldives suffered leg injuries and became disabled. One of them had an injury on the hand. The official did not still recover from the injury incurred on his head” said the commissioner.
He said that both the countries should conduct such events in future so that the relations between the countries will strengthen. He said that they are ready to provide assistance to Maldives in activities like this.
