Attorney General Mohammed Anil have said that the government will ensure that the citizens of Maldives receive all the rights guaranteed in the constitution but it will be done is a just manner.
Anil said that people started talking about human rights in the Maldives after some inmates were shot in the prison. These events occurred after Evan Naseem got killed in prison during President Maumoon’s administration.
Anil said that after these events, everyone was working to protect the rights of in mates. Then people started to fight for more political rights such as right to hold gatherings and form political parties.
Anil said that through this work, the new constitution guaranteed the right to protest and gather. However it is very vague and does not provide any limitations. Anil said that this cannot be done this way and the right should be exercised in a manner which does not violate the rights of other people.
Anil said that the government is not trying to limit any freedoms and today the government is forming legislations to ensure people are able to utilize the rights given in the constitution to the maximum.
