There are challenges but will develop the fisheries industry – President Yameen

President Yameen have said that there are various challenges to the fisheries industry of Maldives but even with these challenges, he will develop the industry.

Speaking at the official ceremony held at Ga.Gemanafushi to celebrate the 36th Fishermen’s Day, last night, the President said that there are various external challenges to the industry and at the same time MIFCO is facing numerous problems.

President said that some countries refuse to buy fish from Maldives at the right price because Maldives is firm on holding to the fundamental principles of Islam. He said that no matter how much these countries pressure, Maldives not will leave the righteous path of Islam.

President said that another huge challenge to the industry is scarcity of bait and the government is planning to start a project to breed species that can be used as baits. He said that the project will cost around 40 million dollars, but the government is willing to do it for the fishermen.

He said that in the following year, 4 mobile canneries will be established in Maldives with assistance from the Saudi government. He further said that, while all this is happening the people who bankrupted MIFCO refuses to acknowledge how MIFCO went bankrupt.

“MIFCO came into being with huge debts. Even today MIFCO is unable to save itself from these debts. The boats are very old and damaged beyond repair. The infrastructure should be renewed. Because of the high debt, all the revenue is given away to pay off the debts. If not for those debts MIFCO would be quite profitable” said the President.

In addition, the President thanked everyone who are contributing to the development of the fisheries sector.

President also noted how close he is with the people of Gemanafushi. President said that in 2017 sewage system will be installed in the island and Bank of Maldives services will begin in the island.
