MNDF has said that they have searched 229 premises in Male’ in their effort to reduce fire related disasters in Male’ and out of them 54 percent of the places do not have any amount of fire prevention mechanisms installed.
Speaking to the press MNDF said that so far, they collected data from 133 places and only 45 percent of the places has fire extinguishing systems. They said that some of the fire extinguishers in these places were expired.
MNDF said that they are conducting operation after dividing Male’ into different zones. Places which are being checked include, restaurants, cafés, and workshops.
In addition, they said that they are mainly checking the structure of the building, if there are any emergency exists and for fire extinguishers. MNDF said that from the places they checked only 28 percent of the places were insured.
MNDF said that they will conduct these operations in Male’, Villimale’, Hulhumale’ and Thilafushi. They said that they will also check vessels. “The purpose of the operation is not to close down places. Our aim is to assess the situation and after that necessary actions will be taken” said the MNDF official.
Furthermore, they said that some places cannot be checked because they are locked. However MNDF is checking these places after contacting with the owners. They said that they will not leave any places unchecked.
This operation is an initiative of Defense Minister Adam Shareef, due to the increased fire related incidents in Male’.
