Maldives is an exemplary country in ensuring the rights of migrant workers
Records of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives shows that Maldives is an exemplary country in ensuring the rights of migrant workers.
According to the records of HRCM, only 30 cases were lodged this year by foreigners. Since, we have 100,000 immigrants in the country, 30 is a really an insignificant amount. Which shows that there is no systematic abuse of foreign workers in Maldives.
The cases lodged include, withholding of passport, not getting the aid of a translator, and delaying of court proceedings. Each of these types has only one case. Only 2 cases were filed saying that suitable work environment was not provided. As for work harassment and unlawful detainment only 3 cases were lodged. Additionally, 7 cases were filed for not paying the salary.
Since there are only 30 cases lodged by migrant workers in Maldives even though we have more than one hundred thousand. While no country is free from problems, this statistic shows that Maldives ensures the rights of immigrant workers very well.
The records of the HRCM does not reveal how much the employers were at fault out of the 30 cases lodged. It is quite possible that some of these cases might not have any basis.
It is estimated that in 2016, hundreds of migrant workers were involved in committing various crimes like rape, murder, and child abuse.
