A lot of people believe that relocating the fuel sheds in Male’ to the industrial village is a needed step to ensure public safety. We have learned that, this is being discussed at policy level of the government.
Defence Minister Adam Shareef Umar said that, Defense Ministry will eliminate the root causes of fire incidents in Male’. He said that they will take the necessary steps to do it. At present, due to scarcity of land, the fuel sheds are not located in suitable locations. Most of the sheds are located in places where people gather a lot. One shed is near the largest hospital in Maldives. This is not practiced in any other country.
The Managing Director of STO Ahmed Shaheer said that, if the government decides to relocate the fuel sheds, STO will happily welcome it. Also, the three private companies that supply fuel in Male’ will also be ready to do it.
Also, when the fuel sheds are relocated to the industrial village, fuel tankers will no longer have to travel in Male’. Also, it can be arranged to deliver fuel to the sheds directly from the tanker. If such a system can be established, it will be very safe.
Also, fuel sheds will not have to halt their services to refill the tanks. It is expected that with the development of the industrial village, such initiatives will be taken to relieve Male’ from many problems like this.
