Waste transfer center opens in Industrial Village


A waste transfer center has been opened in the industrial village and now waste is being collected to that center.

Speaking at a ceremony held yesterday afternoon at the center, Environment Minister Thariq Ibrahim said that starting from tomorrow, there will be no boats docked in Male’ harbor with waste. From now on all the waste will be collected to the waste transfer center instead of the boats.

Thariq said on 25th of this month WAMCO will start collecting waste from houses in Male’ and by mid 2017 they will be able to collect waste from all the houses in Male’. In addition, Thariq talked about the work undertaken by the government to develop the waste management center in Thilafushi.

Speaking at the ceremony officials from WAMCO said that they will collect waste from specialized lorries and once they start doing that, there will be no bad odor in any part of Male’. The MD of WAMCO Ibrahim Fuad said that MDP government rented vehicles to transport waste for 8 million Rufiyaa and the current government is doing it for less than 8 million Rufiyaa. He said that previously 300 million Rufiyaa was spent annually to manage waste but now that much does not have to be spent.
