The official activities began yesterday at a ceremony held near the Friday Mosque. The chief guest of the ceremony was Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar.

Giving the introductory remarks of the function, the Vice President of Dhivehibahuge Academy Rabia Abdullah said that today we are marking the 889th anniversary of the day Maldivians embraced Islam. She said that, that day shows how united Maldivians are and hence that day should be celebrated.

She said that as part of the celebrations, the public will be provided with historical information about how embraced Islam. She said that history is very important to shape the future. “ The Friday Mosque we see here is related to the education of Maldivians. That’s where education started. We should let the young generation know about these things “ said Rabia.

According to history, education first started in the Friday mosque. The initiative was started by King Ibrahim Iskandar who built the mosque. He assigned a scholar to the mosque to teach.
