People of Addu City are concerned that there are so many foreigners working at Shangri-La and Herethere, the only resorts in Addu City.
Some people from Addu who spoke to Miadhu News said that both these resorts employ a lot of foreigners. The information they have obtained proves that these resorts employ more than the quota allocated for them by the authorities.
“ Even now many people from Addu are working at resorts. Addu has the most number of people working in the tourism industry in Maldives. There are people from Addu as general managers in major resorts. However, these two resorts in Addu do not give high positions to people from Addu. Hence all the high salaries go out of the country. We cannot develop Addu unless we manage to retain this money inside Addu. People will always be in this state “ said someone.
One of the biggest problems in Addu City is unemployment. When the garment factories in Addu closed down, job opportunities have decreased. The business owners in Addu said that their businesses will prosper only when people have jobs and money to spend.
Hence, it is important that these two resorts hire people from Addu instead of foreigners.
