93 journalists were killed in and 29 died in the line of duty in 2016
Last year was not a good year for journalists. 93 journalists were purposely killed and 23 were killed in the work environment.

India and Pakistan tops the list of countries with most dead journalists in this region. In Afghanistan 13 died while in India and Pakistan 5 journalists were killed. As for the middle east, in Syria 5 journalists died while in Yemen 8 died. In the Americas, 6 died in Guatemala and 11 died in Mexico.

In 2015, 112 journalists were killed. So in 2016 the figure is less than that. Journalists who died in accidents are at 29. Out of them 20 are sports journalists. These journalists are the 20 journalists who were travelling with Brazilian football team to Colombia. All of them died in the plane crash. Hence, most number of journalists died from Brazil this year.

Reports shows that since 1990, 2300 journalists have been killed. In Pakistan 71 journalists have been killed since 2001.
