Elections Commission have said that they plan to announce the new election date next Sunday.
After a meeting of the advisory committee on elections, speaking to the media EC member Ahmed Akram said that they discussed to conduct the elections on April and to announce an exact date next Sunday.
Speaking to the media after the meeting of the advisory committee, Deputy Chairperson of MDP Ali Niyaz said that EC assured that the elections will be held in April and also they discussed about the timeline. The elections advisory committee consists of all political parties. Niyaz said that he is concerned because PPM and MDA did not take part in the meetings.
Except PPM and MDA all other parties who took part in today’s meeting agreed to conduct the elections on April. Niyaz said that they also discussed to make arrangements in such a way that the candidates who previously submitted forms are able to take part in the elections without any hurdles. They also discussed about the court proceedings that took place regarding the elections.
Niyaz said that the civil court order does not order PPM to take part in the elections but he said that he believes that PPM will take part in something which has a huge public interest in it. Adhalath Party said that they asked Elections to let the candidates who already submitted forms to run in the elections without any new applications.
Deputy Leader of JP, Hussan Rasheed said that they also discussed about the recent amendment to the political party legislation. They asked whether the amendment applies to the candidates who ran in party primaries before the legislation was created.
All parties agree that the law should not be applied on these candidates who ran in primaries because at the time the law was not created.
After taking part in the meeting, even DRP said that they want to conduct the elections as soon as possible.
