A workshop regarding the inclusion of Maldivian coral stone mosques in the world heritage list begins in the Maldives.
Speaking at the ceremony held at Central Hotel to officially inaugurate the workshop, the state minister of Education, Dr.Abdullah Nazeer said that there are many reasons why historic buildings should be protected and maintained.
He said that is is through historic buildings that we know of how our ancestors lived. He said that without protecting such buildings it will be impossible to pass this crucial information to the next generation. “ It is very easy to demolish a place. But the historical information lost in the process will be irrecoverable” said Dr.Nazeer.
Speaking at the ceremony an official from UNESCO said that a lot of work needs to be done once, a building or a place is included in UNESCO world heritage list. The official said that nothing can be done about the place unless it’s done through the guidelines set by UNESCO. “ It is not very easy to include a site in UNESCO heritage list. Even in developed countries sometimes it takes 10 years” said the official.
The government has been trying to include Male’ Friday Mosque for 20 to 25 years now. Relevant authorities have done a lot of work to include it in the list.
The workshop which began today with world class experts, will go on for 5 days.
