Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar have said that, there has been talks to use sail boats to patrol exclusive economic zone of Maldives.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the sailing and rowing competition organized by MNDF, the minister said that it is expensive to use fuel powered boats all the time and it’s high time to think about alternatives.
He said that even though not a lot of fuel is burnt in patrolling the EEZ of Maldives, other possible alternatives should be found. He said that it is important to look at the possibilities and practicality of using sail boats to do it.
The minister noted that the idea was first proposed by Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam. “ The idea is to use engines and sailboats too. When you are on the sea for a week, using this method will be beneficial. Boats may use engine to reach the point. After that they can use sail to stay over the area. “ said the Minister.
He also said that even though that this was a competition, sailing skills will be an important skill for any solider.
Furthermore he said that during the Jihaad of Muhammad Thakrurufaanu, he used sail boats and became victorious against the enemies. “ Today you might have felt how Muhammad Thakurufaanu felt during all his years of being on the sea to save Maldives” said the Minister.
He added that, our grandparents fought against much powerful opponents on sailboats and it was not only the physical strength that allowed them to win but also, by knowing the geography of Maldives and by planning strategically.
