MACL’s MD Adhil Moosa have said that they have almost finished reclaimed the land needed to develop the second runway at Velana International Airport and hence the construction work of the runway will begin within the first three months of this year.
Adhil said that they are getting ready to start the construction work and has even brought in the required equipment. Beijing Urban Construction of China will develop the second runway.
A total of 400 million dollars will be spent on this project. Exim Bank of China provided a 373-million-dollar loan to finance this project. In addition, a new international terminal is being developed at the airport as well. The terminal is designed to cater 7.5 million passengers per year.
These projects will be finished by the end of 2018. Once these projects are completed Velana International Airport will be the most modern and well developed airport in the whole region. A lot of new airlines are talking with MACL to start schedule flights to Maldives. With the second runway, the largest passenger airplanes can land at the airport.
