Official ceremony to mark the day Maldives embraced Islam held.


Official ceremony has been held last night to mark the 990th anniversary of Maldives embracing Islam. The chief guest of the ceremony was President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

The ceremony was attended by Chief Justice Abdullah Saeed, Speaker of the Parliament Abdullah Maseeh, ministers and senior state dignitaries.

Introducing the ceremony, Home Minister Azleen talked about how the government is working to protect Islam in the country. Azleen praised President Yameen for standing up to the many challenges Maldives face because Maldives is a 100 percent Islamic country and because Islamic Shariah is implemented in Maldives. Azleen also thanked the President for developing a lot of mosques within a short period and also for institutionalizing Islamic education.

In the same ceremony, results of the 31st Quran competition was announced. In addition, MNDF presented a skit depicting the events that led Maldives to become an Islamic country 990 years ago.
