Islamic Minister Dr.Ziyad Bagir have said that there were always waqf land plots in the Maldives and even now there are some in the islands are some islanders are unsure of what to do with it.
Dr.Ziyad said that at first Islamic affairs was managed directly by the king in Maldives. When a constitution was formed, two institutions were created to deal with Islamic affairs, and one of them was a ministry related to waqf, according to Dr.Ziyad.
Dr.Ziyad said that, these land plots have been unmanaged for a long time and it is President Yameen who initiated managing these lands and that is a great service to the nation. He said that this will help in promoting the light of Islam.
He also said that the President has a vision to develop many such waqf properties to finance building and maintaining of mosques.
In addition, he said that in the history of Maldives it was always the religious scholars who managed affairs of the religion. He said that however, it was the current government that legally facilitated such endeavors and that will indeed help to spread Islam.
