UN Working Group does not have the authority to order Maldives to take unlawful actions : Dr.Shainee
Fisheries and Agriculture Minister Dr. Muhammad Shainee have said that UN Working Group or any other organization does not have the authority to order Maldives to take unlawful actions.

Speaking to Miadhu News, Dr.Shainee said that while UN Working Group called to free former Defense Minister Nazim, they even did the same for former President Nasheed.

“We are not able to do it because, the constitution of the Maldives does not allow this. Even Colonel Nazim’s case is like this. This working group of UN even made a similar request to the UK but even they did not follow. That is because the decisions of the UN Working group are not legally binding” said Dr.Shainee.

Dr.Shainee said that such things can be done only after amending the constitution and that can be done after all parties talk and come to an agreement on how to do that. “That is why the government invited all the parties for a dialogue” said Dr.Shainee.

Dr.Shainee noted that most countries dismisses the recommendations made by the UN working group. “However, we are answering them. We answer all questions they propose. That is because Maldives would like to have good relations with everyone. However, we cannot accept it when they as us to take unlawful actions. The government’s responsibility is to govern according to the constitution and treat all citizens equally” said Dr.Shainee.

Dr.Shainee said that it is the greatest responsibility of all parties to uphold the constitution but it is sad to see that some parties are encouraging unlawful and unconstitutional acts.

President Yameen have said that he will never take unconstitutional actions and ensured that he will govern within the boundaries set by the constitution.
