President Yameen’s team made STO a capable company that can serve Maldives : Zameer

Tourism Minister Moosa Zameer have said that STO is a company that is capable of trading internationally and can serve the whole country. He said that, STO attained to this level because of the young team picked by President Yameen to run STO.

Speaking at a ceremony held last night at Dharubaaruge to celebrate the 52nd anniversary of STO, the minister said that when President Yameen took the helms of STO, STO did not even have the capacity to start an LC and had no focus either. He said that however, today that has been changed and STO is a capable and a profitable company.

“This revolution was brought by a young team chosen by President Yameen. The current MD of STO Ahmed Shaheer was also a member of that team” said Zameer.
Zameer said that the company which had humble beginnings reached where it is today with the sincere work of many people. He said that it is not something easy to achieve.

“STO has the most number of subsidiaries as well. They make huge profits too. Those companies were formed by President Yameen. When the price of a cement sack went up to 90 Rufiyaa, it was President Yameen that formed Lafarge and brought down the market price to almost 50 Rufiyaa. It was also President Yameen that started the business of roofing sheets and gas as well” said Zameer.

Zameer said that since it is President Yameen who modernized STO, he should be considered as the father of modern STO. “ If STO is running purely to gain profits, then the profits can be four times more than that of now. But that is not the intention of President Yameen” said Zameer.

In addition, he said that the pharmacies opened by STO in all islands of Maldives alone created 500 new jobs. Zameer also noted the fact that the MRI machine at IGMH was installed by STO as well and he said that it shows how much STO is related to everyday life of the Maldivian people.
