Women should always work to ensure their rights: Madam Faathun
First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim have said that women should always work to ensure their rights in accordance with the constitution.

She made that statement while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the first ever national Bashi tournament.

Even people working at the global forefront for women’s right say that even though the legislations state that men and women should get equal rights, the reality is not the same. They say that, these rights can be ensured only when women actively fight for it.

Madam Faathun made this statement at a time where women of Maldives should also do a lot of work to ensure their rights. Compared to other countries women face less problems in Maldives. Even still, there are problems.

If we look at the history of Maldives, the statement made by the first lady is historic. Because, so far, no first lady has ever made such a vocal statement regarding women’s rights.

Speaking on this regard, she further said that no one will come and “gift” these rights to us. She said that these rights should be ensured collectively as a society. In addition, she said that no one should believe that some people among us are weak. Speaking about the achievements of women, she said that the women should advance even more and that they should be empowered. She said that it can be achieved with strength and courage.
