Sri Lanka Embassy in Male’, Maldives celebrated the 69th Independence Day of Sri Lanka, on a grand scale on 4th February 2017 at its premises.
The celebrations were graced by the presence of H.E. Major General (Rtd.) A.B. Thoradeniya USP, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Maldives as the Chief Guest. The highlights of the ceremony were the hoisting of the national flag, reading the massages of H.E the President, the Hon. Prime minister and the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka
In his speech he recognized that the very cordial and warm relationships which had been in existence between the two countries for centuries have now risen to much higher levels. Further, he gratefully acknowledged the unstinted support extended by H.E.Abdulla Yamin AbdulGayoom, the President of Maldives and his government at all time of difficulties and requirements of the Sri Lankan community.He requested the Sri Lankan community to honour the culture and law of Maldives, to extend the brotherhood to all people in this country and to live in harmony and peace when working in this land.
The ceremony was attended by over 150 Sri Lankans. They commemorated the national heroes who were instrumental in winning the freedom from the British ruling in 1948, and also all forefathers of the island safeguarded the independence of the country in its history.
