Sri Lanka celebrates 69th Independence Day
Sri Lanka has started official celebrations of the 69th Independence Day of Sri Lanka. The theme of this day is “national unity”. A special ceremony is to be held at Galle Face today. The chief guests of the ceremony will be President Maithiripela Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wikramsinghe.

Sri Lanka was under the control of British Empire for more than 100 years. During this period the British looted the wealth of Sri Lankans. While Sri Lankans were starving, the British exported food from Sri Lanka to the UK.

Sri Lanka attained independence on 4th February 1948. Till 1972 the official name of Sri Lanka was Ceylon. The name Sri Lanka was given after the country changed into a republic.

Sri Lanka played a major role in the attaining independence for Maldives too. The discussions between the British and Maldives was held in Sri Lanka. The agreement which gave independent to Maldives was also signed in Sri Lanka.

Before the introduction of tourism and mass production of fish products, Sri Lanka played an important role as an economic partner to the Maldives because they bought dried fish from the Maldives. In addition, in early days Sri Lankan bought other Maldivian products such as “Addu Bondi” and “Dhiyaahakuru”.
