B.Atoll Maalhohi decides to stop using plastic bags in the island. This decision was taken as part of the program conducted by Getaways Maldives to stop the Maldivian society from using plastic bags.
The council of Maalhohu said that this work will be difficult and at first shops will sell plastic bags instead of giving them for free. They said that they will hold discussions with the public of the island very soon.
Dhiraagu has donated 10,00 reusable bags to the islanders to encourage them to stop using plastic bags. Maldives Getaways says that through their “ban the bags” campaign they intend to ban plastic bags from Maldives by 2020.
Maldives Getaways has started the project in AA.Bodufulhadhoo, Ukulhas and V.Keyodhoo as well. In addition, they said that soon 10 more islands of B.Atoll will join the campaign.
Maalohu has a population of 688 and they plan to stop using plastic bottles as well. They are planning to bottle water in glass bottles instead of plastic bottles from the water plant in the island.
Plastic bags pose a great danger to the environment and it takes thousands of years for it to degrade. Hence, if we throw plastic bags to the sea, it will destroy the marine life and will have drastic effect on our economy as well.
