IGMH has decided to give special opportunity to scan for breast cancer and conduct mammography.
In a press conference held today at IGMH, officials said that the most common type of cancer among women is breast cancer and hence they started the program so that people can know if they have cancer well in advance.
The radiology department of IGMH will conduct mammography every Tuesday from 08000 hours to 1300 hours. Those who want this service can make appointments by calling 292. If there are a lot of people who are interested in the service, IGMH plans to conduct mammography on an additional day as well.
IGMH said that scanning is very important. “If cancer is identified in early stages, it is very likely that it can be treated. Hence those who are 40 years old should test voluntarily. Also testing once, a year or once in two yearsis also recommended” said an official from the hospital.
They said that if they notice anything during the tests, they will arrange the patient to consult with a doctor as soon as possible. “Some people think that breast cancer is treated by gynecologists. But actually, breast cancer is treated by surgeons” said an official.
In addition, to give chance for people from the atolls, IGMH plans to add extra testing days during school holiday periods. Furthermore a special clinic will be operated every Thursdaymorning. No appointments should be made by those who want to get services of the clinic.
Even though those who voluntarily wants to do mammography can do it on Tuesdays, if there is a reason to do mammography it is possible to do it every day from the hospital.
