MP for Kaashidhoo constituency Faisal Naseem have said that sometimes the appeal process does not start even by the time the jail sentence is over and that it is a matter of great concern.
Speaking at the parliament today, Faisal said that he does not believe that everyone is equal in front of justice in Maldives. He said that only some people get justice.
“Honorable speaker, even by the time the jail sentence is over, the appeal process does not start. We should be worried about this. This might become a norm. These are not things the people want. When we talk about development, justice should be established. Even if we have mega structures and huge buildings, if there is no justice, then nothing is complete” said Faisal.
Faisal said that the people wants access to justice and rule of law.
Meanwhile a lot of people are concerned about delays in the appeal process. Especially appeal procedure in cases of politicians are extremely slow. For instance, Adhalath Party’s president Sheikh Imran’s case was scheduled after 10 months and then again it was cancelled. People are also concerned that even after newfound evidence related to former defence minister, Colonel Nazim’s case the PG has not done anything.
In a conference held last Sunday by the Judicial Administration, even the Chief Justice Abdullah Saeed noted some of these things. He said that the judiciary of Maldives should earn the trust of people. He said that all the cases should be finish on time in accordance with the laws. The Supreme Court and Judicial Administration of Maldives are working hard to reform the judiciary of Maldives.
