Human rights will be promoted in Maldives by the empowerment of its people: Dr.Asim
Foreign Minister Dr.Muhammad Asim have said that Maldives will promote human rights by the empowerment of its people.
He made this statement while speaking at the High-Level Segment of the 34th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. He said that it is of utmost importance for the government of Maldives to promote human rights and to do that, the approach used in Maldives is empowering people by creating opportunities for them that enables them to lead dignified lives.
Dr.Asim also noted that Maldives provides free healthcare for everyone, free education for everyone to ensure that no child is left behind and that Maldives provides care for the elderly. He also highlighted that the state provides assistive devices for the physically impaired and allowances for vulnerable groups such as single parents, people with special needs and the elderly.
“The Maldives is proud to say that we provide fourteen years of free education for every child in the country. We have achieved universal primary education and gender parity in educational attainment in primary and lower secondary education, with 59 percent of high achievers being girls” said the minister.
In addition, he said that Maldivian women has enjoyed the right to vote since the early 1930s and that Maldivian women enjoy equal pay at work. He also mentioned that the gender quality act which was enacted last week.
