MP Fayyaaz of Gan constituency have said that today he protested at the parliament because the speaker of the parliament did not accept the amendment proposed to the energy drinks and tobacco taxation bill by him.
Fayyaaz said that he proposed to use 5 percent of the tax revenue from the new legislation, on conducting tobacco and energy drink awareness programs. He said that such a regulation can be made under the tobacco act as well, but since so far, no such regulation has been made and that is why he proposed it. Fayyaaz said that with the increase in duty, the price of these products will increase and the number of consumers might decrease, however real change can be seen by creating awareness among people.
He said that the amendment was accepted in the committee stage and even some members praised the amendment. He said that however it was not voted in the committee stage. “The regulations state that if it is not passed in the committee, it can be proposed to the parliament session. That is why I tried to present it to the floor” said Fayyaaz.
Fayyaaz said that the speaker of the parliament did not accept his amendment saying that it was not related to the bill. However, Fayyaaz said that it is related to the bill.
