A government official has questioned whether the former foreign Minister of Maldives, Kerafa Naseem tried to strengthen relations with Israel to stabilize Maldives and to promote Islam in Maldives.
The official said that Kerafaa Naseem trying to relate Saudi investments and extremism shows that Naseem has the intention to carry out extremist activities in Maldives.
“They have always been extremists. Their whole family has this ideology. Always fighting with those in power. They have the record of conducting terrorist activities in Maldives. Even Naseem himself was convicted of hiring mercenaries to change the regime in Maldives. So even today his thinking will be like that” said the official.
The official said that the government explained very well why the government cut diplomatic ties with Iran. “It is not only Maldives that cut ties with Iran. Even various Arab countries and even USA did the same. So if what Naseem says is true, even USA cut ties with Iran due to an external pressure right?” said the official.
Maldives ended diplomatic relations with Iran during a time when the embassy of Saudi Arabia in Iran was attacked and set fire. The whole world was with Saudi Arabia during those days.
Maldives has never done anything with Iranian assistance. However, Maldives receives Saudi assistance all the time. So, there is no reason why Maldives should not be close with Saudi Arabia.
While Naseem is talking is this regard, Maldives has done nothing against Iran other than cutting diplomatic ties. Maldives requested Iran to respect neighboring countries and to maintain diplomatic relations with neighbors. Syria was the only country who did not made statements in this regard about Iran.
Maldives is not an enemy of Iran. Even recently the national volley ball team of Iran visited Maldives to play a match. The team thanked for the hospitality shown by the Maldivians. They also said that they are ready to help the Maldivian national team.
While, Iran has not expressed any concerns in this issue, Kerafa Naseem has expressed that he is worried about the matter. So counter terrorism agencies should be aware of this since Naseem has a history of plotting terrorist attacks.
