The whole world is talking about the planned mega projects in Maldives, a country which once planned to buy land abroad for mass migration due to drastic effects climate change.
One newspaper which reported on this was Columbia Basin Herald, a country which does not even have much relations with Maldives. The newspaper reported that Maldives is switching from climate threat to mass tourism. In addition, they reported that the former President Nasheed was trying to buy land for migration while current President is conducting projects in Maldives focusing on mass tourism.
It is true that sea level is rising. Maybe Maldives faces some amount of danger because of this. Back in 2008 some people thought that it was a great plan to abandon the country instead of finding solutions to that problem. However, economists found this idea worrisome even at that time.
The people who did not worry when the government was trying to abandon the country are today worried that a mega investment is going to be done after reclaiming land near a small sandbank. Do they think that leaving the country has less implications than Saudi Arabia investing in Maldives ? These are all questions that arises.
