Motion of no confidence against Maseeh fails !
Motion of no confidence against Maseeh which was put forward by the opposition has failed, securing Maseeh his position as the speaker of the parliament. Among parliament members who were present in the parliament chamber today 48 members voted in favor of Maseeh.

Opposition members did not take part in the vote because they were not happy about the voting procedure. They created unrest in the parliament chambers and 13 members were escorted out of the parliament.

Speaking at the parliament before the vote, Speaker Maseeh said that during his 3 years as the speaker he always focused on dignifying the parliament and has never done anything unlawful or unconstitutional.

In addition, he said that when the opposition filed the no confidence motion, they made some mistakes and he had the chance not to accept it but decided to put it on the agenda anyway. He said that the opposition highlighted 6 main points against him and none of them are true.

Furthermore, the speaker said that 98 percent of the cases filed at the parliament were finished this year and it would be a lie to say that the parliament is not able to finish the work. Maseeh said that the parliament is not the parliament building but the member of parliaments and hence the members has all the power to make decisions.

He said that ministers were questioned 52 times in the last period and heads of independent institutions were summoned to committees. He said that hence he believes that adequate work was done by the parliament to hold the government accountable. In addition he said that members are given chance to debate in the parliament floor based on what the political parties decide and that is not something the speaker decides.
