Qasim Ibrahim arrested in Dhoonidhoo !
Leader of Jumuhoory Party, Qasim Ibrahim has been arrested by the police and taken to Dhoonidhoo. He was arrested from his house Maafannu Villa with a court order.

The court warrant issued to arrest Qasim states that he is being arrested because he is suspected of bribing parliament members to vote for the no confidence motion against the speaker of the parliament and because it is suspected that he is planning to influence the vote of no confidence against the deputy speaker of the parliament which is scheduled for 11th April.

In addition, the court warrant states Qasim is suspected of encouraging to topple the government and that if he is free he will influence and try to hide the evidence regarding these cases. Furthermore, it also states that the investigative authorities find Qasim to be a public threat.

Gasim Ibrahim has told repeatedly that he has never done anything against Maldives constitution and always he is working hard to improve Law and order in Maldives. He has repeated denied government.s allegations. He has said they are all “government made” allegations to sue him since he is the only Oppostion leader not under arrest.

Previously Qasim was summoned to the police station twice regarding the speech he gave on 26th March in Kunooz. He cooperated with the investigators both the times. Sources say that when police sent the case to PG, they sent it back to police asking to further investigate the case.

Qasim was arrested suddenly tonight and he did not receive any legal assistance. His lawyers have not been given the permission to meet him yet because the arrest does not show on the system. Jumuhoory party have announced that there will be an impromptu gathering in Kunooz tonight regarding this matter.
