Maldives Police Service has stated that in Male’, gatherings can be held without a prior notice only at the Alimas Carnival area.
A statement released by the police states that, as per the amendments brought to the freedom of assembly law, gatherings can be held at only in places that are permitted to hold gatherings by the Housing Ministry. To gather in all other places, a written permission by Maldives Police will be needed.
In addition, the statement says that they will stop any gatherings that are organized unlawfully.
However, the opposition parties stated that a constitutional right cannot be limited without amending the constitution first. They said that they gathered near the criminal court because Qasim Ibrahim was arrested unlawfully and to give him support to show that the people are with him.
