The people of Maldives would like to know how MIRA knows that the money MIRA is demanding from Villa is really money that Villa owes to the state.
Maldives Inland Revenue Authority keeps saying that they have taken action against more than 1000 businesses for failing to pay taxes and fees. However, people don’t worry much at such figures but they are really concerened and the behavior of MIRA.
It is the legal duty of MIRA to take action against parties who do not comply with the law. It is how it is everywhere else in the world as well. However, in other countries tax collection authorities do not collect money just because the government orders them to do so.
“We are asking because the tourism ministry asked us to do so” is not a reasonable answer. This is not how an independent and responsible authority like MIRA should answer. No matter who requests, an institution like MIRA should only take action against a company after making sure that the money they ask for is really money owed by the company.
According to Villa Shipping and Trading, they only knew that MIRA took action against them, only when they went to pay money to immigration. If an institution like MIRA acts like this, soon wives will be divorced without the husband knowing about it.
There are tax collection authorities in other countries as well. No tax collecting authority will freeze the accounts of a company without informing the company first or demand to pay money just because a higher authority asked them to do so. Recently MIRA signed MUOs with South Korean taxation authority. Is this how they practice in South Korea ? Is this the international best practice ?
These are questions the people would like to be answered. They want to know who are forced to pay through MIRA. Today it might be Villa that is going to be bankrupted. Who knows who else will face this problem tomorrow ? Only Allah will know that.
When major companies in a country goes bankrupt, it will affect the economy of the country. Government should always work to make sure that major companies in the country gets developed. Because it will be most beneficial for the government and the people when such companies prosper.
On the day of judgement, it will not be MIRA that will be questioned,Allah will not need MIRA Building in the day of Judgement, but those who are running the institution. On that day can they say that they acted upon the orders of a certain Minister? Everyone is accountable to Allah. On that day, you won’t be wearing a suit and a tie. Oppressors would be wearing garments made of fire from Hell, that is for sure. Sheikh Zakariyya has previously explained what will happen to those leaders who are irresponsible.
