State Trading Organization STO is ready to combat oral cancer and to save Maldivians from getting oral cancer.
Today STO has sponsored the cancer awareness campaign of the Maldives Cancer Society for one year.
In a function held at the main building of STO, the agreement between Maldives Cancer Society and STO was signed by MD of STO Ahmed Shaheer. President of MCS Juwariyya Saeed signed on behalf of MCS.
Speaking at the ceremony, Juwariyya said that under this campaign they will conduct screening programs and various awareness programs. In addition, she said that under the campaign 10 clinics will offer free tests for oral cancer. She further said that oral cancer is the fastest spread type of cancer in Maldives and that happens due to dietary habits and some other life style choices. She said that chewing areca nuts and eating Supari increases the risk.
In addition, awareness messages will be displayed in restaurants, cafes and some other public places in Male’.
Speaking at the function, health minister Nazim said that the government tries to minimize import of food products that are harmful for health. He noted that the government has increased duty on fizzy drinks and energy drinks earlier this year.
