JP Leader Qasim Ibrahim has forgiven those who arrested him and detained him unlawfully for 6 days and 19 hours. Qasim is renowned in the Maldives for his generousness and kind personality.
After he was freed by the High Court today, Qasim told the press that he believes that the Criminal Court and the Police acted as such against him may be by mistake and that he believes that it might happen.
Even today Qasim praised the police. He said that the police at Dhoonidhoo treated him with respect and with a smile on their face. However, he said that the rules are stricter at Dhoonidhoo now compared to 2004.
In addition, he said that during this detention he learned that the state institutions are developing and that he is happy for that. “When police suspected me of all those crimes only 6 days were given for investigation. I think it was done fairly. Even when they accused me of huge crimes the criminal court judge asked to present evidence within 6 days. That is something that might happen in that situation. I do not believe it was wrong. Since many clauses of the parliamentary privilege act has been annulled, they were probably mistaken” said Qasim.
Qasim Ibrahim’s lawyer said that detaining a person without enough evidence is unacceptable and that it is unconstitutional to detain someone to obtain evidence.
