Prominent lawyer Maumoon Hameed have stated that not being aware of the law is not an excuse that can be used by institutions or individuals.
He made this statement regarding the recent detention of Qasim Ibrahim. He was detained without following the necessary procedures.
Maumoon said that it is not an excuse to say that they were not aware of the law and those who violated the law should be held responsible.
Maumoon said that the PG should be held responsible in all criminal cases. He said that if anything unlawful is done the PG should take action. He said that it is also the responsibility of the PG lawyers to take action in such circumstances.
Maumoon said that the member who said that he distributed bags of money confessed openly to bribery. He said that however such cases are not being investigated while smaller cases are investigated and prosecuted. He said that this raises questions about the judicial procedures of Maldives.
In addition he said that the PG charged JP Leader Qasim Ibrahim with bribery without having any evidence. He said that the PG should think about prosecuting those who openly confessed to crimes before charging Qasim.
Furthermore he said that the PG should not wait for another party to raise complaints if a crime is committed openly and should take immediate action. Maumoon said that the people's trust can be earned only by acting with responsibly.
