Qasim loses hope of getting a just verdict
JP leader Qasim Ibrahim has lost hope of getting a just verdict in the ongoing trial of him at the Criminal Court.

He lost hope not because of the charges he is facing but because of the way he is being treated during the hearings. He did not even get a chance to speak at the hearing. During the remand hearing, the judge ended the hearing while Qasim was making statement.

Another issue that was noted about Qasim’s hearing is that there is a special procedure on talking at the hearing and under this procedure the defendant can only speak for a specific amount of time. This is evident from the answer given by the judge when Qasim mentioned that the remand hearing was ended while he was speaking.

“The judge will give a chance to speak based on the procedure and it will be given for a specific time” said Chief Judge Baary.

It is said that the trials in Maldives are held based on Islamic principles. However, how can they invent new procedures that were not used by the prophet and the rightly guided caliphs of Islam. Can the time given to the defendant to speak in his defence be limited? this is an important question.

Scholars say that a country’s demise will start once there is no justice in the country. Only Allah will know the time.
