President of AP Imran Abdullah has been taken to jail tonight. He was taken to jail around 11:00 pm from his residence by Custodial staff along with a huge crowd of police.
Council member of AP, Shidhatha Shareef said that it is not acceptable to take Imran back to jail and the high court ruling to uphold his jail sentence earlier today. Shidhatha said that Imran was staying at home while following all the conditions and the condition of the jail has not been changed since he was moved.
She said that no lawyer will accept the fact that Imran was jailed for 12 years for something he said very publicly. She said that UN and many countries have also condemned how Imran’s trial was carried out. She said that the High Court’s decision to uphold the ruling of the lower court does not have an ounce of justice. “Do not want to criticize court verdicts. But the people will not accept when court verdicts favor a specific political ideology” said Shidhatha.
Shidhatha said that today democracy is being eradicated in Maldives and political liberties are being curtailed. She said that even though all political leaders are arrested the reform works will not stop.
