The current administration has spent 500 million Rufiyaa on the development of hospitals in the atolls alone.
Speaking at a press conference held at Health Ministry today, the ministry said that more than 500 million Rufiyaa was spent on infrastructure development alone. In addition 50 million was spent to procure ambulance and 186 million was spent on furniture, among other expenses.
Officials said that when the government took office, the infrastructure was in a poor condition and all these places have now been renovated.
Health minister Abdullah Nazim said that the government is working on to provide laboratory services to all islands regardless of the population. In addition, he said that they have provided x-ray machines and scan machines to many islands and more are on the way. Nazim said that now dialysis service will be available in 5 islands of Maldives and they are going to introduce the service in 6 more islands. Nazim also said that they are working on introducing ICU service in large hospitals.
Furthermore, the minister said that Thalassemia tests can be done in many atolls and required medicine will be available within the atolls. Since the majority of the professional doctors in Maldives are foreigners, the government has sent 39 students to study medicine abroad. This is more than the amount sent in the past 10 years.
