STO have said that they will do whatever they can to ensure the safety of workers in Maldives.

Speaking at the “Occupational Safety and Health Conference” held at Champa Central to mark world day for safety and health at work, Ahmed Shaheer the MD of STO said that while the government is conducting an unprecedented number of projects it is very important to take measure to ensure safety and security of workers.

Shaheer said while such massive number of projects are conducted a lot of people will be doing manual labor and hence a lot needs to be done for their safety. He said that since 2003 ILO has been marking this day with different slogans and the purpose of that is reduce work place injuries and causalities by raising awareness.

In addition, Shaheer said that on average globally 6300 are injured at the work place daily and that is 2.3 million people per year. He said that such cases occur in the Maldives even though it is rare. “Even last night two people died and today one paralyzed. This is sad” said Shaheer.

Shaheer said that STO initiated the conference because STO has very close relations with the construction industry of Maldives. He said that STO hopes to celebrate this day every year in association with MACI. In addition, Shaheer said that they want to work with Defense Ministry and Housing Ministry and to ensure that the safety of the workers meet the requirements set by the government.
