Deputy leader of JP, Ameen Ibrahim have said that international organizations and countries of the world are not going to sit and watch while Qasim is being tortured by the government.
Ameen said that countries that wish well for Maldives are closely monitoring how the government is treating Qasim Ibrahim and when the time comes, these countries will take action.
Ameen said that the international community takes Qasim’s case as a serious case because Qasim has helped many people and because Qasim has done a lot and is doing a lot for the development of Maldives.
“Hence, the world will not just watch the government do whatever they want with someone like this. This will be seen soon. I assure this to all the supporters of Qasim Ibrahim” said Ameen. Ameen said that the independent institutions in the country are failing because they hesitate to take the required actions.”
Ameen said that there is no institution in Maldives that is willing to investigate the MP who admitted to distributing bags of cash to parliament members as bribes.
“Where are the independent institutions? All the institutions are influenced by the government and there is nothing they can do in that situation. Institutions are becoming more and more powerless. Even if we compare with 2015, they are more powerless now” said Ameen
In addition, Ameen said that the government is intimidating the people using state institutions but the reform movement will not be stopped and that it is an obligation upon everyone. Furthermore, he said that previously decisions regarding detentions are taken in a single hearing but this was not done for Qasim.
Ameen said that the whole world and the people of Maldives believes that Qasim was arrested unlawfully and hence there are countries and people that are concerned about it. In addition, Ameen said that the economy of Maldives depends on Maldives and if the international community is not happy with the affairs of Maldives, countries will not send tourists to Maldives. He said that the people will face all the difficulties as a result.
