Secretory General of JP, Ahmed Sameer have said that the government is doing everything they can to influence the upcoming local council elections.
Sameer said that MP for Kaashidhoo constituency was brought to Male’ for police investigation while he was campaigning outside Male’. He said that as a result the campaign was badly affected. He said that the council elections are going to be held on Saturday while JP leader remains in a 6 by 8 feet cell. Sameer said that he believes that is also something the government did to influence in the elections.
“The whole campaign is in chains and locked up in a cell. The spirit of any party is the leader of the party. Then what can we do ? What campaign can we do?” questioned Sameer. Sameer said that he cannot think of a reason Qasim is locked up in a cell and is treated like a dangerous criminal.
“Whatever he said, he said it publicly. The whole Maldives heard it on live TV. Hence I do not know why he should be kept in such a small cell to investigate this matter” said Sameer.
Sameer further said that during this time the people of Maldives should carefully think about what is going in the country and should act based on national interests. He said that even with the challenges they face JP is doing what they can and he hopes that the people will accept it.
