Opposition coalition have said that the Elections Commission has unlawfully influenced the ongoing local council elections to manipulate the results in a certain way.
Speaking to the press this afternoon, Deputy Leader of JP, Dr.Hussein Rasheed said that no law obligates the EC to ensure a specific voter turnout rate. He said that the responsibility of the EC is to prepare the voting procedure and conduct the elections on time. “The commission has no authority to worry about the number of Voters.”
Dr.Hussein said that if the time allocated for voting is over, the EC cannot extend time if there is no que at the voting stations. He said that the laws regarding the elections does not permit this. Furthermore, he said that the EC does not have the authority to act in contrary to the law.
Dr.Hussein said that, this was done to ensure that some PPM voters get to vote and to manipulate the results of the vote.
