Is an 8 by 6 foot jail cell the best place to detain JP Leader Qasim Ibrahim ? Is this the international best practice? Large number of people are asking the government to bring an end to Qasim’s detention. Everyday protests are being held in Maamigili and other islands demanding his releae.
Qasim Ibrahim is also a Maldivian hence no one is against conducting a free and fair trial if he has committed a crime. However people are against him being tortured. Not few people, but the majority of the Maldivians are against this.
Even if some people have different political opinions from that of Qasim, no one would want to see Qasim hurt. People are concerned because the police is investigating Qasim for something he said in front of hundreds of people and also on live television. Meanwhile, the police have not investigated anyone who threatened MPs and also not investigated the MP who claimed to have distributed bags of cash as bribes.
People are worried about the condition he is being detained. Qasim is not a dangerous criminal or a terrorist. Hence the people does not believe that Qasim should be detained for investigation. However is being detained in a small cell like common criminals. People are questioning whether this is just and whether this is the international best practice.
Even if Qasim looks fit, he has many health problems and always take treatments for these problems. Next is Ramadan and no one knows what the government is going to do regarding Qasim’s detention. No one knows how many ‘intelligence’ reports are going to come up.
People have such worries because of the ‘pen drive’ that was used as evidence in Colonel Nazim’s case. According to police, there is nothing which wasn’t on the pen drive. Finally nothing was found. It was simply 100 percent fake. However, now no one knows who owns this pen drive or the origins of it. Most people believe its likely that the police got it from the devil.
Do the people who slaughter others in this world think that they will not die ? Do they think that they can escape on the judgement day after using an intelligence report? The people of Maldives pray that Qasim will be given the courage and patience. Allah will listen to those who are being oppressed.
