Information Commissioner Abdul Azeez Jamaal Aboobakr have said that corruption can be stopped by not withholding information and by encouraging greater transparency.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of anti-corruption conference, the commissioner said that some people define corruption very narrowly but it is not that narrow.
He said that cheating, stealing and other similar crimes are corruption as well. He said that such crimes are also committed by using the power of the office and hence these crimes will be considered as corruption as well. He said that corruption has become a social disease in Maldives.
Abdul Azeez said that he does not believe that there is a mechanism to identify the corruption prevalence rate in Maldives. He called to do a comprehensive research to identify these problems.
