Health Minister Abdullah Nazim have said that since there are not enough Maldivian nurses in Maldives, training programs will be increased.
Speaking at the ceremony held last night to mark international nurse’s day, the minister said that there are 2000 nurses in Maldives and out of that 45 percent are foreigners.
That shows that 900 nurses in Maldives are foreigners and this is a significant amount. At the moment 200 nurses are trained in the Maldives every year. Hence to train 900 nurses it will take 4 and half years. Since there is no administrative framework for nurses, every year many nurses have to leave their jobs. In addition, health service providers are also increasing every year.
The Tree Top Hospital will also need same amount of nurses as IGMH. In addition the tertiary hospital in Kulhudhuhfushi would also require nurses. Hence, the number of foreign nurses will increase by the end of this year. This happened because the past government did not focus on training Maldivian nurses.
