For the first time in Maldives history, Women have won majority in councils of 4 islands. Councils of Ha.Kelaa, Thakandhoo, Aa.Thoddoo and Lh.Kurendhoo now has councils with a majority of female members.
Women in Thakandhoo always takes initiative in social causes and their motto is “if men can do it, even women can”, said a woman from the island.
Fathimath Fazeeha and Aishath Asifa two MDP members secured the Thakandhoo council seats. Meanwhile, Aishath Vishaama of PPM and Farhanaz Muhammad of MDP won secured the Kurendhoo council seats. They are also incumbent council members.
Even though Thoddoo council previously was an all-male dominated council, Aishath Adam and Khadeeja Niusha won seats in this year’s election. Since the preliminary results of the council election is still not out, it is possible that more women have won seats in many other islands.
