The conditions set by the court should be annulled since it was based on false information by the police : Lawyers

Qasim’s legal team have stated that the conditions set by the criminal court on Qasim should be annulled since it was based on false information given by the police. The lawyers said this via a statement released today.

Summary of the statement of the lawyers:

On 21st April 2017, Qasim Ibrahim was arrested accusing him of influencing parliament members with relation to the no confidence vote against parliament speaker Abdullah Maseeh. Maldives Police Service request the PG to criminally charge Qasim on 9th May 2017.

During the remand hearings, police said that they have not sent the case to the PG office when questioned several times by Qasim’s defense team. However, the PG office has sent a letter to Qasim’s lawyers stating that the police requested to charge Qasim Ibrahim but PG decided not to charge since there is not enough evidence to charge Qasim regarding the matter. Hence Qasim is greatly concerned because police lied in this case. Since the criminal court’s condition set on Qasim are based on the information given by the police at the criminal court, and since it has now been proven that the police were lying, we have requested the criminal court to annul the conditions set by the criminal court.

Qasim was kept in detention for 26 days under different accusations. Qasim was first detained unlawfully and the high court ordered to free Qasim. Since there was no evidence against Qasim Ibrahim, the PG office decided not to charge Qasim in the second case.

Hence Qasim views that he was kept in detention for 26 days and was investigated purely for political reasons.
