Will retain business relations with Qatar even if diplomatic ties are severed: Maldives


Government of Maldives has stated that Maldives will continue to have business relations with Qatar even if diplomatic ties are severed with Qatar.

Speaking to the press at the president’s office, Foreigner Minister Muhammd Asim said that the decision of Maldives different regarding Qatar even many other Islamic countries decided to sever all ties with Qatar. The minister said that Maldives only suspended diplomatic relations and no other action has been taken.

Dr.Asim said that the foreign policy of Maldives did not change and Maldives will continue to strengthen relations with Islamic countries. Speaking to the press, Attorney General Anil said that Maldives took this action because Maldives has a zero-tolerance policy for terrorism.

Anil said that there might be some challenges with this decision but the government will try to overcome these challenges. In addition, he said that this decision is related to the sovereignty of the country and that the Maldives will always prioritize to protect the individuality and the sovereignty of the nation. Furthermore, he said that the government will seek aid form other parties to develop the stadium in Hulhumale’, if Qatar decides to pull out from the project due the decision taken by the government.
